The Cuchara Valley has something for almost everyone. A temperate climate makes this area a highly desired location to live. The mix of living in the Valley but having the recreation opportunities of the mountains just minutes away has long since been a lure. In recent years La Veta has found a niche as a great place for those looking for a summer home. La Veta is home to several working artists, whose work can be seen at the Gallery in the La Veta Town Park, as well as several local businesses.
With the San Isabel National Forest surrounding the Cuchara Valley, there are numerous opportunities for camping, hiking, mountain biking, hunting and fishing. Bear and Blue Lakes at the Cuchara Recreation Area, located south of La Veta, offer public access for fishing. Trail information can be obtained from the San Isabel National Forests office in La Veta. Horseback riding, golf and other activities are available through private vendors.
The Valley is also home to a variety of wildlife. In addition to deer and elk, there are big horn sheep, black bear, mountain lion, fox, bobcat, coyote and beaver. The Valley is best represented by a comment made by explorer Col. John M. Francisco, who came to this area in the 1840's and said, "This is paradise enough for me". The twin Spanish Peaks that tower over the area have been used for countless years as a landmark for those passing through the area.
