BIG ELK RIDGE - LAS ANIMAS COUNTY, COLORADO
LOCATION
“Big Elk Ridge” consists of 1,350± acres of beautiful mountain hunting
or recreational grounds located just one mile east of Stonewall off Hwy.
12 near the small southern Colorado town of Stonewall. The town of
Stonewall is named after a massive natural stone wall, which towers
above the forests and ridges for miles along the valley. Highway 12,
known as the “Highway of Legends” is a heavily traveled scenic bypass
that starts in Trinidad, Colorado and winds through Weston, Stonewall,
Cuhara and La Veta. At La Veta Hwy. 160 begins and completes the loop to
Walsenburg. Trinidad, the nearest major town, is the county seat of Las
Animas County.
PROPERTY
The 1,350± acre property is heavily treed and mountainous; situated
adjacent to the Purgatory River basin. Locals know this area as a prime
hunting ground for elk, deer and bear. This property is fenced on all
sides, has power, incredible views, and is accessible from multiple
locations. The varied mountainous terrain is chalked full of trees, has
deep draws, and good populations of deer elk and turkey. There are no
improvements, but numerous sites are available with beautiful meadows
and incredible views. This ranch has great potential for development,
hunting, or recreational use. Numerous pinions, cedars, firs, and
ponderosa evergreens cover the terrain, as well as thick groves of oak
brush. A small pond sits in the heart of this property attracting all
types of wildlife. Many trophy elk and deer have been taken from the
ridge top on the south boundary of this ranch, and with mostly
undeveloped ranches and protected public lands surrounding this ranch it
is no wonder that the herds are big and healthy.
NEARBY RECREATION
In addition to the recreational possibilities on your own property, this
area of Colorado offers numerous possibilities. Fishing at Monument and
North Lakes is only minutes away. The nearby San Isabel National Forest,
Spanish Peaks Wilderness and public lands such as the Bosque Del Oso
offer hiking, biking, horseback riding, and hunting on endless trails.
The area provides for abundant ATV, motorcycle and snowmobile
possibilities as well. Nearby Trinidad Lake State Park offers
waterskiing, camping facilities and good fishing opportunities. The
nearest golfing is found at Trinidad and La Veta.
WILDLIFE TESTIMONY
I recently had an encounter with a beautiful Snow Lynx, which was a
successful transplant to this part of Colorado. While hunting wild
turkeys I was on my way down the hillside on the edge of this beautiful
ranch when I came face-to-face with this beautiful little wild cat. It
became apparent that this part of the state has a well-protected
population of wildlife. Early on that morning I spotted countless herds
of deer and elk on my way to chase large groups of wild turkey roaming
the grounds. The lynx was just a final stamp of approval that this
country and this ranch are truly wild and beautiful.
